In the heartland of the Xiang River, beneath Guanyin Mountain, the village of Shiniu lies quietly in the river of time. This obscure small village has become a beacon of hope for countless burn patients thanks to an octogenarian and the red medicinal liquid in his hands. The elderly man is named Zhou Zhubao. The "Hongchen Yuye" (Red Dust Jade Liquid), a potion he has dedicated half his life to, can alleviate pain within one minute and control exudate within five minutes. After healing, it leaves no pigmentation or scars, and even large, deep burns require no skin grafting, as the skin regrows to be indistinguishable from the original. The indelible marks left by the burn are permanent, yet the marks left by the Hongchen Yuye can be easily restored to their original state. This has written an immortal legend in the field of traditional Chinese medicine for treating burns.
一、赤子初心，从赤脚医生到研发者
1944年周主宝出生在极其贫困的农民家庭，一家人流浪到洞口县，三岁的小妹妹和刚生下不久的弟弟因病夭折，哥哥也因病在床上躺了一个多月，自身多次与病魔擦肩，让这个偏远山村的少年立下“行医救人”的誓言。
I. From Barefoot Doctors to Researchers: The Original Aspiration of a Child
In 1944, Zhou Zhubao was born into an extremely impoverished peasant family. The family wandered to Dongkou County, where his three-year-old younger sister and newborn brother succumbed to illness, and his elder brother remained bedridden for over a month. Having repeatedly narrowly escaped death, this young man from a remote mountain village resolved to "practice medicine and save lives."
1972年28岁的周主宝背上小药箱，成为村里的赤脚医生，那时村里工分报酬微薄，10分工仅值4角多钱，而看病的诊费和注射费只各5分钱，药费报销一半，每人每年只交合作医疗一元钱，即便如此，仍有村民交不起每次看病二三角钱的费用记上欠账，有一户8口人家4年中治疗102人次，每次都是记欠帐，4年中共欠28元钱，另一户欠下46元，其中一次她小孩经诊断感染肺炎了，要立即去公社卫生院，她说没带钱来，于是周主宝借给她10元钱，立即去卫生院。4年中全大队共欠下500多元的欠帐，那年公社正组织工作人员清查各大队的帐目，合作医疗室500多元的欠帐成了清查的重点，群众也一时还不了欠帐。为了填补这笔在当时堪称巨款的窟窿，周主宝变卖了家中值钱的物件，又四处借贷还了300多元群众欠款还欠下200多元，自己在群众大会上做了检讨。刚下台时民兵营长走近对周主宝说：“我们知道你没用一分钱，都是群众治病的欠帐”。这份医者仁心，在目睹太多烧烫伤悲剧后愈发坚定，村上瓦匠因瓦窑崩塌热蒸汽灼伤大面积皮肤灼伤大医院治疗无效而去世，又邻村小女孩脚踩在柴火灶里一只脚被截肢成了终身残疾。而他自己读小学时冰天雪地里打着赤脚去上学，下坡时滑倒了，右手指插在提火箱里，手指烧伤了，痛了一天一夜。这些刻骨铭心的伤痛，让周主宝立下誓言：“今生一定要攻克烧烫伤顽疾”，从此他踏上一条艰辛的研发之路，广读医药书籍，拜访民间中医。周主宝清楚地知道研究之路是十分艰难的，自古有打下的烙印的俗说。宋江脸上的烙印神医安道全用金粉玉粉磨擦很长时间才摩擦掉，华佗生在三国时期，精通外科，可东吴大将甘宁遍身都有箭疤。
In 1972,28-year-old Zhou Zhubao became a barefoot village doctor carrying a small medical kit. Back then, the village workers 'points system paid meager wages—10 points were worth just over 40 cents, while medical fees and injections cost only 5 cents each. With half of the medication expenses reimbursed and each villager paying just 1 yuan annually for cooperative medical care, some villagers still couldn't afford the 2-3 yuan per visit. One family of eight incurred 102 medical visits over four years, each recorded as unpaid debts totaling 28 yuan. Another family owed 46 yuan, including a case where a child diagnosed with pneumonia needed immediate treatment at the commune health center. When the child's mother said she couldn't afford it, Zhou lent her 10 yuan to get the child treated. Over four years, the entire brigade accumulated over 500 yuan in unpaid debts. That year, as the commune organized staff to audit brigade accounts, the cooperative medical clinic's 500+ yuan debt became a key focus, leaving many villagers unable to repay. To cover this then-considered massive debt, Zhou sold valuables from his home and borrowed money, repaying over 300 yuan in debts while still owing 200 yuan. He later made a self-criticism at a village assembly. When he stepped down, a militia commander approached Zhou: "We know you didn't spend a single penny—it's all debts from villagers' medical bills." Witnessing countless burn tragedies strengthened his compassion: a village mason died from extensive skin burns caused by collapsing kiln steam, and a girl from a neighboring village lost a leg after stepping on a firewood stove, becoming permanently disabled. During his elementary school years, Zhou Zhubao would trudge barefoot through icy fields to school. One day, while descending a slope, he slipped and plunged his right finger into a firebox, suffering a severe burn that tormented him for a full day and night. These indelible scars inspired him to vow: 'I will conquer scalding injuries for good.' Thus began his arduous journey of research, where he immersed himself in medical texts and consulted folk healers. Zhou Zhubao knew well the challenges of scientific inquiry—a truth etched in history. The legendary scar on Song Jiang's face took a long time to fade after being rubbed with gold and jade powders by the renowned physician An Daoquan. Meanwhile, Hua Tuo, a master of surgery from the Three Kingdoms era, bore arrow scars all over his body, a testament to his extraordinary resilience.
每天步行数十公里往返于四尖峰，河北岭的深山密林中采药，每一味药他都亲自煎水内服，并烧烫伤自己局部皮肤涂药做试验。然后组成处方药，开始用中草药捣粉成糊状药，治疗几个轻伤烧烫伤患者疗效很好。1981年本村五保老人李中轩被高压电击伤，全身皮肤溃烂，当时立即送往县人民医院，医师诊断后说，当前中国没有这么好的药能治愈这么严重的伤，拒绝收治，第二天抬了回来，几十米外都腐臭难闻，在患者亲属的恳求下，周主宝同意给他治疗，将粉剂药调成糊状敷于患处包扎，每次要一面盆药，要一身衣服那么多纱布，换药时先用温开水浸湿药膏，再用小刀片小心翼翼地刮除，每次换药要2个多小时，他是五保老人，自已没有一分钱，兄弟侄儿们也很困难，为了救治老人，周主宝卖掉了家中的猪买药买纱布坚持治疗，在没有打针服药输液的情况下，一个多月后，李中轩自己出来晒太阳了。
Every day, he walked dozens of kilometers back and forth between the deep mountains and dense forests of Sijian Peak and Hebei Ridge to collect medicinal herbs. He personally decocted each herb for oral intake and even burned his own skin to apply the medicine for testing. Then, he formulated prescriptions and began using Chinese herbal medicine to grind the powder into a paste, which proved highly effective in treating several patients with minor burns and scalds. In 1981, Li Zhongxuan, a senior citizen under the Five Guarantees program in his village, was injured by a high-voltage electric shock, resulting in severe skin ulcers. He was immediately sent to the county people's hospital, but the doctors diagnosed that there was no such effective medicine in China to cure such serious injuries and refused to admit him. The next day, he was carried back, and the powder had rotted and reeked within dozens of meters. At the request of the patient's relatives, Zhou Zhubao agreed to treat him, mixing the powder into a paste and applying it to the affected area. Each treatment required a basin of medicine and as much gauze as a person's clothes. When changing the dressing, he first soaked the ointment in warm water and then carefully scraped it off with a small blade. Each dressing change took over two hours. As a Five Guarantees senior citizen, he had no money, and his brothers and nephews were also in financial difficulty. To save the old man, Zhou Zhubao sold his family's pig to buy medicine and gauze, persisting in the treatment. Without injections, oral medications, or intravenous infusions, Li Zhongxuan was able to go out and bask in the sun on his own after more than a month.
十二月二十八日，李中轩的弟弟李中达提着糖，酒、鞭炮，红包来答谢周主宝，周主宝只收下那瓶虎骨酒，价1元5角7分钱，其他的都不收，李中达说：“你莫嫌少了”，周主宝说：“这瓶酒1元多钱我不嫌少收下了，您的红包总不是几角钱吧，我会嫌少吗？”，李中达说那也有四五百元。周主宝说，您积攒了一个冬天，都给了我，过年了您一大家人开支怎么办？李中达感动得流泪了，当晚周主宝煮了腊肉丸子，请李中达吃晚饭，高兴地喝着那瓶酒。
On December 28th, Li Zhongda, Li Zhongxuan's younger brother, brought sweets, wine, firecrackers, and red envelopes to thank Zhou Zhubao. Zhou accepted only the bottle of tiger bone wine priced at 1.57 yuan, refusing the other gifts. "Don't mind the small amount," Li Zhongda said. Zhou replied, "I accept the bottle for over 1 yuan. Your red envelope is worth several yuan—would I complain?" Li Zhongda added that it was worth around 400 to 500 yuan. Zhou sighed, "You saved all winter's earnings for me. How will your family manage during the New Year?" Li Zhongda was moved to tears. That evening, Zhou cooked cured meat dumplings and invited Li to dinner, where they drank the bottle of wine with great joy.
李中轩治愈后没有疤痕能照常劳动。这次成功让周主宝看到希望，但糊状药粘附皮肉难以清洗，也给患者带来换药痛苦，水剂药容易变质，保存时间不长，尝试用自酿米酒浸泡中药，反复调整配方比例和泡制时间，经过自己和患者试验疗效很好。周主宝把此药取名叫红尘玉液。
After recovery, Li Zhongxuan was able to resume normal labor without scarring. This success gave Zhou Zhubao hope, but the paste-like medicine adhered to the skin and was difficult to clean, causing additional pain for the patient during dressing changes. The liquid medicine was prone to deterioration and had a short shelf life. Zhou attempted to soak the herbal medicine in homemade rice wine, repeatedly adjusting the formula ratio and steeping time. After testing with both himself and the patient, the therapeutic effect was excellent. Zhou Zhubao named this medicine "Hongchen Yuye" (Jade Liquid of the Mortal World).
二、红尘玉液，凝结半世心血的神奇药效
2007年10月3号，国家知识产权局颁发的发明专利证书送到了周主宝手中，专利号20041100468802，这款历经数百次试验的药剂有了一个响亮的名字《红尘玉液》，这瓶红色的液体，集止血，活血、消炎止痛，抗菌解毒，祛腐生肌，软坚化结，祛疤美容延缓衰老等十大功效于一体，无需添加防腐剂，可保存十三年不变质，即能外用也能内服。

The Miraculous Efficacy of Red Dust Jade Liquid, Condensed with Half a Lifetime of Dedication
On October 3, 2007, Zhou Zhubao received the invention patent certificate issued by the National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), with the patent number 20041100468802. This medicinal agent, which had undergone hundreds of trials, was given the resounding name "Hongchen Yuye" (Red Dust Jade Liquid). The red liquid integrates ten therapeutic effects: hemostasis, promoting blood circulation, anti-inflammatory and analgesic, antibacterial and detoxifying, necrotic tissue removal and tissue regeneration, softening and resolving hard masses, scar removal, beautification, and anti-aging. It requires no preservatives and can be stored for up to thirteen years without deterioration, suitable for both external application and oral administration.
红尘玉液的神奇在无数患者身上得到印证。白仓镇村民石平国，因驱蚊药瓶爆炸起火全身烧伤面积42%，在市医院治疗14天花费38000多元，仍日夜呻吟，伤口无好转，经人指点回家求助周主宝，涂沫红尘玉液仅2分种，剧烈的疼痛戛然而止，当晚睡上安稳觉。经过二十多天治疗，石平国完全痊愈，总花费2500元，况全身没有疤痕。
The efficacy of Hongchen Yuye has been demonstrated in numerous patients. Shi Pingguo, a villager from Baicang Town, suffered 42% full-body burns due to an explosion of a mosquito repellent bottle. After 14 days of treatment at the municipal hospital, costing over 38,000 yuan, he continued to groan day and night with no improvement in his wounds. Upon advice, he sought assistance from Zhou Zhubao at home. After applying Hongchen Yuye for only two minutes, the intense pain abruptly ceased, and he slept soundly that night. Following over 20 days of treatment, Shi Pingguo achieved complete recovery, with total expenses amounting to 2,500 yuan, and no scarring remained on his body.
邵阳县枫江煤矿的瓦斯爆炸事故中，吕禹华等4名工人被烧得面目全非，其中吕禹华烧伤面积达62%，在县医院治疗5天后，仍大量渗出液，疼痛呻吟不止，生命垂危，煤矿老板经人指点找到周主宝来医院看望患者时，只见四位工人妻子在失声痛哭，令人惊叹的是，涂沫红尘玉液1分钟后，便停止呻吟，5分钟后停止渗出液流出，两位轻轻伤者12天痊愈，两位重伤者26天康复，四人都未留下任何疤痕。
In the gas explosion at Fengjiang Coal Mine in Shaoyang County, four workers including Lü Yuhua were severely disfigured. Lü Yuhua alone sustained 62% burn coverage. Despite five days of treatment at the county hospital, he continued to ooze fluid and groan in agony, his life hanging by a thread. When the mine owner, guided by others, brought Zhou Zhubao to visit the patients, he found the wives of the four workers weeping uncontrollably. Remarkably, after one minute of applying the "Mud of Dust and Jade Liquid" treatment, the groaning ceased, and fluid oozing stopped within five minutes. The two minor injuries healed in 12 days, while the two severe cases recovered in 26 days. All four workers emerged unscathed, with no visible scars.

What brought Zhou Zhubao the greatest comfort was helping Gao Bin, a 16-year-old girl from Beijing, regain her life. Gao Bin had suffered severe facial and arm scarring from a natural gas leak eight years prior. After graduating from university, she faced job rejections and even had bars deny her entry due to her appearance. Upon winning a lawsuit, she learned of Zhou Zhubao's story. On the eve of the 2002 Spring Festival, Gao Bin, now in the United States, sent a letter of gratitude filled with deep appreciation for this rural doctor. From elderly recipients of the Five Guarantees program to coal miners, from urban white-collar workers to migrant youth, the traces of "Hongchen Yuye" (a traditional herbal remedy) have spread across the nation. In Jincheng Town, Shaoyang County, Li Suyun, a 50-year-old woman, suffered 47% burns from a firecracker explosion. After prolonged ineffective hospital treatment, she returned home and was cured by "Hongchen Yuye." Due to financial difficulties, she spent 3,600 yuan on medication, while Zhou Zhubao only charged 450 yuan for medical expenses.

Chen Cailv, a migrant worker in Shenzhen, developed a pressure ulcer the size of a bowl and exposed bone and ankle due to a fall injury during hospitalization, which could not be cured in Shenzhen or county-level hospitals. 三、医者仁心，跨越半世纪的坚守与大爱
周主宝的诊室里，没有昂贵的医疗设备，也只有一幅天津患者家属送来的一面锦旗，他对许多治愈的患者家人都说过不准送礼送锦旗。从27年赤脚医生生涯到进城扫街十年的坚守，这位医者的仁心从未改变，正当他在扫街每月只有300元工资时，东北大连市的候敏因液化气烧伤60%的面积在医院治疗31天花了50000多元，医师说再用20万元也不能治愈，劝其回家。当时周主宝的大女孩给厂家推销药品，在医院看到这位患者，打电话问爸爸帮不帮她治疗，周主宝说：“他家钱很可能用空了，要治就免费给她治疗经联系患者家人愿意治疗，治疗一个多月终于治愈了，用药费11000元，分文没收。要扫三年街才有11000元啊”。

The Benevolence of Physicians: A Half-Century of Commitment and Great Love
In Zhou Zhubao's clinic, there were no expensive medical devices, only a silk banner presented by the family of a Tianjin patient. He had repeatedly told the families of many cured patients not to send gifts or banners. From his 27-year career as a barefoot doctor to his decade-long dedication in urban street patrols, this physician's benevolence remained unchanged. While earning only 300 yuan per month from street patrols, Hou Min from Dalian, Northeast China, suffered 60% liquidized gas burns and spent over 50,000 yuan on 31 days of hospital treatment. The physician stated that an additional 200,000 yuan would not cure her and advised her to return home. At that time, Zhou Zhubao's eldest daughter was promoting pharmaceuticals to a manufacturer. Upon seeing the patient in the hospital, she called her father to ask for help with treatment. Zhou Zhubao said, "His family's money is likely exhausted. If treatment is needed, it should be provided free of charge." After contacting the patient's family, they agreed to the treatment. The patient was cured after more than a month of treatment, with medication costs totaling 11,000 yuan, which were not charged at all. "It would take three years of street patrols to earn 11,000 yuan."
一天上午，一位大嫂打来电话，说她老公烧伤面积83%，问周主宝能不能治好？周主宝说：“这么严重的伤不敢保证治愈。”大嫂说：“医师说百分之百会死，我想用你的药试一下，大家都说你的药很好，万一没治好也不怪你”。这位患者姓周，是煤矿老板，也是煤窑瓦斯爆炸烧伤5人，4位较轻伤者送到新宁县医院去治疗，周老板伤势最严重怕送不到县城就在当地镇医院治疗。治疗40多天用了80000多元仍无好转，生命垂危。周主宝送去几瓶药，周老板妻子早晚躲着医师面给老公涂药，几天后医师觉得奇怪，这位患者明显好了许多。周老板妻子对医师说，我在暗地涂邵阳县周医师的烧伤药，要不我丈夫恐怕早就不在了。自此医师同意用周主宝的红尘玉液配合治疗，一个多月后，周老板出院了，全身没有疤痕，用红尘玉液药费6000多元，如今周老板是回龙市镇宾馆老板。而送到县医院治疗的4位较轻伤患者有2位在治疗中去世。
One morning, a woman called to say her husband had suffered 83% burns and asked if Zhou Zhubao could cure him. Zhou Zhubao replied, "I can't guarantee a cure for such severe injuries." The woman said, "The doctor said there's a 100% chance of death. I want to try your medicine. Everyone says your medicine is good. If it doesn't work, I won't blame you." The patient, surnamed Zhou, was a coal mine owner. Five people were burned in a coal mine gas explosion, and four of the less severely injured were sent to Xinning County Hospital for treatment. Zhou's injuries were the most severe, and he feared they wouldn't reach the county town, so he treated them at the local town hospital. After over 40 days of treatment costing more than 80,000 yuan, there was no improvement, and his life was in critical condition. Zhou Zhubao sent several bottles of medicine. Zhou's wife secretly applied the burn medicine prescribed by Dr. Zhou from Shaoyang County to her husband every morning and evening. A few days later, the doctor found it strange that the patient had shown significant improvement. Zhou's wife told the doctor, "I secretly applied Dr. Zhou's burn medicine from Shaoyang County. Otherwise, my husband might have died long ago." From then on, the doctor agreed to use Zhou Zhubao's Hongchen Yuye (Red Dust Jade Liquid) in combination therapy. Over a month later, Zhou was discharged with no scars. The cost of Hongchen Yuye was over 6,000 yuan. Now, Zhou is the owner of a hotel in Huilong City. Among the four less severely injured patients sent to the county hospital, two died during treatment.
周主宝既扫街又治病，为了研究开发红尘玉液他和妻子每天凌晨四五点种就起床清扫街道，这一扫就是十个春秋。寒来暑往，晨曦中的扫帚声与深夜的药剂调配声，构成了他最质朴的生活旋律。他在“年关泪”中写道：

红尘玉液开发时 定向亲人报捷音
Zhou Zhubao, who both swept the streets and treated patients, dedicated himself to the research and development of Hongchen Yuye (a traditional Chinese medicinal elixir). Together with his wife, he rose at 4 or 5 a.m. every day to sweep the streets, a routine that persisted for ten years. Through the changing seasons, the rhythmic sound of his broom in the dawn light and the murmurs of his midnight herbal preparations formed the most unadorned melody of his life. In his work "Tears of the Year's End," he wrote:
New Year's tears
The drizzling rain falls, the north wind howls, and the cold cuts to the bone.
Every shop's door is shut, the streets quiet with few passersby.
Couples work together to clean, while firecrackers crackle in the air.
A man's tears are seldom shed, yet now they're soaking his sleeves.
He's been away from home for eight whole years, yet he misses his parents dearly.
During the Spring Festival, they long for their child's return.
Now, with no one to care for them, they wait anxiously—when will they finally come home? The family lives in joy, as the world unfolds its splendor.
They share the good news with their loved ones.
这份坚守，源于他对患者的赤诚，无论贫富亲疏，周主宝始终一视同仁。周主宝宁可少收一万，不可多收一分，下花桥村一老人的孙女烫伤胸腹用红尘玉液治疗，老人坚持要付药费1400元，周主宝只收260元。天津史朋先生小孩脚烫伤在医院久治无效，要植皮，医师说会有疤痕，甚至会残疾，而用红尘玉液治愈。史朋先生带着妻子孩子坐飞机到长沙，再从长沙坐车到周主宝家当面感谢，如今史朋先生与周主宝一家亲人般情谊。
This unwavering dedication stems from his genuine compassion for patients, treating all equally regardless of wealth or social standing. Zhou Zhubao would rather accept a 10,000-yuan reduction than overcharge.
